10 QUESTIONS WITH NEIL SEGURA
The newest Cartoonista answers the questions fans are dying to know....well...maybe just curious to know!

1) To those who haven’t read your work, How would you summarize the Neil Segura/Forever Freshman creative universe?
“Forever Freshman” is an all-ages, semi-autobiographical comic book I Illustrate and co-create with my good friend and writer Ray Mendivil. The characters are based on ourselves as two socially awkward teenagers. We were huge band geeks in high school lacking any social skills, money, or transportation living in the outskirts of Los Angeles. We thought this would be a fun story to tell and we are more than happy to poke fun at ourselves and hopefully make people laugh in the process.

2) Fans of ____ will dig Forever Freshman?
Tacos, Girls & Rock ‘N’ Roll!

3) If you could make a movie of your book- Who would you cast as the leads and who would direct?
I’m thinking a traditional 2D animated film. I could see Billy West voicing our characters. I’d also bring the Farrelly Bros into the mix to direct. I’d like to see what they would do with an animated film. Oh, and NOFX could do the soundtrack.

4) What’s the best thing about having your very own art/comic book show?
We recently had our comic release party at Geeks in Whittier and were blown away by the amount of people who came out to support us. It’s a great feeling when people go out of their way to see what I’m doing creatively. I love it when someone gets a laugh from the book, it let’s me know I’m doing something right.

5) How important are your particular art tools to you style?
When working on Forever Freshman I like to keep my style as consistent as possible so I will try to use the same pens and brushes. Right now I use a Pentel brush pen for most of my inking. The comic is one aspect of my overall artistic style. I emphasize the cartoony look because that’s what works for the series. I go through phases all the time with styles and tools, it all depends on the project.

6) If people only judge a book by its cover- what’s one thing that would surprise people about you?
I once ended up in the hospital after a wild night of karaoke.

7) What do you listen to while you draw?
My ipod is on shuffle most of the time which has everything from Billy Joel to N.W.A. Sometimes I want something more dramatic, so I’ll put on a movie soundtrack to get into a storytelling mood. My go to soundtracks right now are “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Tron Legacy”. I have tried listening to podcasts, but they get too distracting while I’m drawing. It’s like chewing gum and walking for me.

8) Do you draw from photo reference usually or from your mind’s eye?
I use a lot of photo reference. I think it’s important to study what I am going to draw in order to make it believable. Google has helped in a big way to search for any image in seconds so there is really no excuse.

9) How do you handle critiques of your work?
I take criticism in the spirit in which it’s intended. I am always interested in other people’s opinions of my work, I may not always agree, but if they are sincere about their criticism I can respect that.

10) What is your latest project, and where can people find it?

I am concentrating on Forever Freshman Issue 2, which will hopefully be available early 2012. Find us at www.foreverfreshman.com

Jim Lujan had a dream. Food trucks lined up as far as the eye can see. All different styles, all delicious. Crowds of people gather, talk, and share a bite to eat. In the mist of the grey blue fog, shines the flicker of an outdoor video screen. On that screen, Ghettomation and other hilarious cartoons display as the crowds mingle and have a laugh together. A true communal event.

The Cartoonista Drawing Club for kids had another successful demo last night at The Los Angeles County Library of Baldwn Park. Approximately 60-70 children participated in Cartoonista drawing demos, comic book art and story drawing exercises.

Cinco de Mayo always brings many tasty treats and ethnic delights to the San Francisco Bay Area. In celebration of the season, the Cartoon Art Museum presents the First Annual Latino Comics Expo on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8, 2011.

The Latino Comics Expo is an event celebrating the influence of Latino culture on the comic book arts. The event founders are longtime Bay Area arts patron Ricardo Padilla and cartoonist/publisher Javier Hernandez.

Attending creators include Michael Aushenker, EL GATO, CRIME MANGLER; Hector Cantu, writer of the BALDO newspaper strip; Jose Cabrera, CRYING MACHO MAN; Jaime Crespo, TORTILLA; Javier Hernandez, EL MUERTO; Rafael Navarro, SONAMBULO; Anthony Oporeza, AMIGOMAN; Grasiela Rodriguez, LUNATIC FRINGE; Carlos Saldaña, BURRITO; and others to be announced. Museum patrons will have the opportunity to meet these artists, purchase books, get original sketches and participate in workshops and special presentations throughout the weekend.
Highlighting the Expo will be a rare convention appearance by Mario Hernandez, who launched the legendary LOVE AND ROCKETS comic book series back in 1982 , along with his brothers Jaime and Gilbert. Mario will be conducting a reading and signing. An exhibition celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of LOVE AND ROCKETS is scheduled to launch at the Cartoon Art Museum in 2012.

“We’re honored that Ricardo and Javier approached us to host this historic event,” said Cartoon Art Museum Curator Andrew Farago. “They’re bringing a lot of knowledge and a lot of enthusiasm to the Expo, and I’m looking forward to working with such a talented group of creators. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Ricardo’s already started planning for the Second Annual Latino Comics Expo.”

10 questions with the Cartoonista's loveable, friendly, smiling, huggable prince of darkness (yup...we just said that right there!)

1) To those who haven’t read your work, How would you summarize the Geo Brawn creative universe?

It's a bit scary, a bit fantastic, a bit real all rolled into one. It's where the line between supernatural and the natural world is blurred just enough.

2) Do fans of Twilight run in horror from your work once they realize it’s so different?

Most of the time, yes. And that's okay, really. I pride myself on having vampires in my stories that don't sparkle.

3) If you could make a movie of one of your books- Who would you cast as the lead and who would direct?

I was lucky enough to meet Guillermo del Toro last year,and I love his work with Pan's Labyrinth, Blade II and the Hellboy Movies, So that's a no brainer for me. I'd love to have him direct Everdance. And as for a starring actress to play the lead of Kate Bennett. I'd love to have someone like Anne Hathaway. She was a pick of mine for her innocence and yet dark side that I've seen her play. The role would need someone who could do both and change it on a dime, so to speak.

4) What’s the best thing about having your very own art show?

For me its being able to really put a spotlight on the characters of my stories in The Untold Chronicles. But also I think the same same could be said for any piece I do for a show. Even none chronicles related. I think its about bringing the subject to life for those who view it in the way I see it. Living.

5) Do you listen to music when you create art? If so, who are you listening to lately?

Always. I need that sound to flow when I work. My itunes library is 17,000+ titles just for that reason. And my listening choices depend on the scene I'm creating. Hard rock
for action sequences, soft ballads for sad or heart warming moments. It depends, I love Peter Gabriel, and Tori Amos's early work, I lately am into Florence and the Machine,
And The work of Bable too. Kate Bush will always be a favorite of mine. I like sounds that open one's mind. The Script is really good too. Oh and I just got into Mumford and Sons... They got a lot of heart.

6) If people only judge a book by its cover- what’s one thing that would surprise people about you?

That in spite of having a dark brooding appearance, I am very approachable and light spirited. The dark side of me is very noticeable, But I like to go out and have a beer
and joke around too. Most people are shocked by that. They think of me first, and immediately wanna hide the butcher knives... But after a minute or two that get very
comfortable and realize I'm not going to eat them with a bowl of pinto beans and a nice Chianti.

7) What’s the one Geo Brawn book someone DOESN’T want to read right before going to bed?

I think Everdance (Book One) is a good one to not read before you tuck into bed. The idea that the person living next door, who you've seen at Trader Joe's and walking the
dog at dusk is a blood thirsty vampire behind closed doors is the scariest concept of all. People like to see their monsters out right. The monster within, to me, is the scariest
one of all. The eyes in the dark waiting for you to let your guard down... And all along it's the guy you saw watering his or her lawn. The monster you can't see, until it
sinks its fangs in you like a Big Mac.

8) Do you draw from photo reference usually or from your mind’s eye?

I do both. I like the realism of a photo reference for some pages and need it to really hook the reader in. And other times I over animate a face or a body language to illustrate or emphasize a light or comedic moment. I love blending funny occurrences with my stories. I mean thats what life's like a lot of time too. It makes the reader more relaxed right before I go in for the kill on a page.

9) Does your wife (Nancy) ever give you advice or critiques on your work?

A lil' story,.. We'd been dating all of two weeks when I get this call at eleven O' clock at night and its her. And just as soon as I say hello she starts in, "You're doing it wrong... You put in your website that this characters name means this, when it actually means that. You need to fix it!" I knew then I was gonna marry this girl. Right then. My wife has two masters and two bachelors degrees in ancient studies and mythology. SHe is actually brave enough to be working on her Ph.D as we speak. Her knowledge really does come in very handy in my work, because she knows where all the bodies are buried, literally. We have an extensive library at home on any reference
I might ever need. So I do indeed consider her a major asset in my work.

10) What is your latest project, and where can people find it?

My latest work it a kind of follow-up to Book One in The Untold Chronicles, called Blood Rites; Next Gen. Its the story that plays the other side of the coin to Everdance.
where the main character Kate has to learn to survive after her vampire husband and blood provider is killed, this book Blood Rites is the story of the group of
supernaturals who killed him, and their history and story through the eyes of their newest member, Cherry Bomb. And it'll be available on my website, and through Indyplanet.com, And various comic stores like Geeks in Whittier, and JPM Comics in and anywhere you can catch me at the many horror cons I do like Monsterpalooza, Weekend of Horrors, or Trinity of Terror. The Cartoonistas were happy to be invited to the Rowland Heights Safety Fair. The event included lots of community organizations (including the Nuvein foundation for the Arts). We met lots of nice folks and did some cool (if we say so ourselves) art. Thanks to everyone that came down and supported us! Wolverine by Javier Hernandez. For opening day of Wolverine (May 6th) the Cartoonistas will be drawing outside at RUBIOS in next to the Edwards Theater in West Covina!

Cartoonistas at the Rowland Heights Community Safety Fair

Live Art event at the Rowland Heights Park. We'll be with Nuvein at their table.

Address is 1500 Banida Ave, Rowland Heights. Basically take the 60 Westbound to Nogales, exit Southbound on Nogales and turn left on Colima and proceed to Banida. Then turn left and shazam!

Event is from 10am-2pm.

Friday the 13th- Pasadena Art Night 2009. The city is open for art. Free shuttles and lots of gallery shows. We displayed at the Pasadena Central Library, our second showing there. The Cartoonistas were represented by Gras Rodriguez, Javier Hernandez, Jim Lujan and Raul Aguirre, Jr. (L-R; Jim, Raul, Jav, Gras)

Big Bad Bill was thrilled to receive a "Lil Bill" painting by Jim Lujan. Bill has always supported the Cartoonistas (and the arts) and we love 'em!

Javier Hernandez: "Please..no paparazzi!" Jav was one of the main attractions this evening. He demonstrated comic creation techniques and the crowds were really into it. Javier teaches a comic workshop and really has the magic touch when it comes to teaching.

All in all the people really made the show special. Thanks to all the parants and kids and couples and teens that made our night in PASADENA ROCK! As Arnie said...."We'll Be Bach (Yeh, I said Bach!)

It was a packed house. Everybody seemed to have a pretty good time. Loud and fun. There was a ton of artwork created that day. Lots of folks went home happy.

Cartoonistas attack! Jim, Gras, Ted, Javier, Romo, Will

Lovely art, lovely art patrons.

Cartoonistas art was displayed as it was created on the walls of Geeks and was sold.

Window art! Yes! Just like in Amsterdam's red light district? Well, not quite. There was a crowd gathered all night though. It was sort of surreal. That's Steve Romo in the window.

The newest Cartoonista: ROXANA! She made her debut at this event and she ROCKED! We are glad to have her on board. She brings a great variety to the already diverse lineup.

Ted Seko revealed an amazing black and white creature style that completely amazed the crowd. We hope to see more of that in the future. He did 3 or 4 pieces in that style that evening. They were hugely popular.

Thanks Ted Lujan for the gig. The staff at the Atlantic Library were amazing. The kids...CRAZY! we loved it. They did too! Over 100 people in attendance. WOW. What an awesome night. Javier Hernandez ROCKED the crowd with his Iron Man and Joker pieces. Near child rioting broke out when it came time for the free raffle. The Iron Man will be hanging up in the library soon (he donated it). It was a packed house and the Cartoonistas would love to do it again.

All in all it was a good time had last night in Pasadena. The Pasadena Central Library is a beautiful place. I think we missed the loud music, though. That always adds the to atmosphere. The crowd seemed very interested in our art processes. Pasadena is a great place with lots of great people who like great art and the night was....well...pretty great. We would LOVE to do another show in Pasadena.

Mini-Comics Dump Truck

The Mini-Comics Dump Truck has launched. Its a group experiment that has artists creating mini-comics and mailing them to everyone involved in the project. Founded by Kevin Cross, it looks to be an interesting artistic endevour....and a great way to get free comics!
